JOHN MACKAY

 

Trantlebeg: MACKAY JOHN (PIPER) His family came from Tongue, his home was an Inn.

Married a sister of Rob Sutherland, Croick, and had a brother Bob who retired from Customs and stayed at Trantlebeg.

 

Johns family:

Wemyes , unmarried, Metropolitan police.

Angus (piper) killed in action 1914-18 war.

Bob (piper) became owner of Navidale Hotel, after being river superintendent Helmsdale river.

Jes married Jack White, retired to Portgower.

Willie (called Winnick) (piper) was in forestry in Borgie and Skerra, died after 1914-18 war.

Johnnie (piper) also composer of music, stayed as crofter. (Protected employment during wartime)

Nell was a pupil teacher, married Pipe Major George Ackroyd, Black Watch, went to South Africa. Had two children, boy and girl, who remained there. The girl died in the 1980s.

 

A Macrimmond fled to Tongue from Glen Elg after setting fire to houses occupied by people who had killed his brother. He is thought to have taught piping in Tongue.
