The Emigrants
Margaret Campbell of Golval and James Patterson Mackay from Moine House
Sailed on The Hornet to Geelong, Australia in 1854
Moine House
Robert and Elizabeth Mackay had a son, George Scobie Mackay, who married Isabella McLean. They were married in Aberdeen but George was from the Highlands and returned home where they were the first tenants of Moine House.
George worked as the gamekeeper for the Duke of Sutherland for the area of the Moine and a good bit else. He was succeeded by his son William.
One of George and Isabella's grandchildren was James Patterson McKay who was born in 1832.
In 1851 James married Margaret Campbell of Golval and later Portskerra. Margaret worked as a domestic. They left the north after the wedding having listed the Tongue Inn as their residence on the marriage records.
They travelled out on the Hornet in 1854 and were listed as 'excellent immigrants', they travelled as part of the Highland and Island Emigration Society. Most of the highlanders on this trip stuck together in the west of Victoria.
