2005 Home Front
This project ran from 2005 into spring 2006. It was focused on exploring the experiences of World War II in Mackay Country. There is a dearth of research on the impacts of this war in the rural areas of Scotland. Below is a brief extract of some of our findings. This project culminated in an exhibition in Strathy Hall.
The aim was to record the ‘Home Front’ memories of local men and women Themes to be covered included memories of evacuees, domestic life (food, clothes, croft etc.), memories of serving in armed forces, memories of forces stationed in area, homecoming memories and thoughts on what World War II meant at the time and what it means to people now.
