Strathnaver Museum

 

The Museum is located in the former church of St Columba at Clachan, Bettyhill, a listed building and interesting in its own right as the site of the parish church of Farr. It was established by the late Dr Ian Grimble and a group of interested locals who “determined among ourselves to make a museum for the district in which will be preserved the evidence of the history, way of life and arts of our forebears and to call it Strathnaver Museum which will be open to the public”.

 

The Museum has been open to the public since 1976 and its wide-ranging collection of artefacts reflects the Trustees original aims, including the incorporation of specific exhibitions relating to:

 

  • Prehistory

  • The Farr Stone

  • Strathnaver Clearances

  • Life in the 19th and early 20th Centuries

  • Collection of the Clan Mackay Society

 

Development of this small traditional museum has been steady over the years. The Museum has been maintained by a loyal team of volunteers and Trustees and achieved Full Museum Registration status in 2003. Also, from 2003 the Museum became an integral part of the 21mile long Strathnaver Trail, which takes the visitor, through way-marked footpaths and sensitive interpretation, out into the ancient and historical landscape from Altnaharra to Bettyhill.

To preserve and promote the history and the culture of the area for present and future generations by conserving, interpreting and augmenting the Museum’s collections together with the archaeological, historical and natural history of the area, for the public benefit, by running the museum and all its organised activities based on the best possible practices.
