WELCOME to this very special area with its magnificent coastline of cliffs and beaches, its iconic mountains, and its sparkling lochs and rivers. There are even patches of grizzled woodland to explore. We hope you enjoy it all. But please remember that it is also a working landscape, so be sure to follow the Scottish Outdoor Code. It can also be a very wild area in terms of both weather and terrain, so do take care, especially on the higher routes.
The Walks are arranged in groups, and are colour-coded and graded so that you can easily see whether you are taking on a pleasant stroll or a major ascent. All the walks are shown in relation to each other on the centre map pages, and all walk descriptions start from the car park opposite the Ben Loyal Hotel in Tongue village. Distances given are as measured on the map, and times are approximate, depending on your level of fitness and how often you stop for photos & snacks.Where a walk is one way (ie. not circular), the figures given are for there and back again, except for Walk 14: the Moine Path, where it is assumed you will only want to walk one way !
If attempting one of the hill routes, make sure you are equipped with waterproof clothing, strong walking boots, and a map, compass, torch, and whistle. GPS and mobile phones are fine but should not be relied upon in this area. Do not walk alone unless you are an experienced hill-walker, and always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back – and remember to tell them of your safe return !
